Millennials: Generation Stress

Millennials have recently become the generation with the highest reported stress levels. They are commonly referred to as “Generation Stress” due to the high level of anxiety they feel about things like job availability, student loan debt, and pursuing their passions.

High stress levels are also becoming a common problem in today’s educational system. In addition to personal and social issues, many students are struggling to declare a major. The increased number of career choices and opportunities has caused a majority of millennials to become stressed and anxious about selecting the perfect profession. Many feel too young and ill equipped to make such a life changing decision. On average, students change their major up to three times during their college career, potentially causing a delay in graduation.

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, almost 80% of college students claim to experience daily stress. The confusion and uncertainty of narrowing down their interests and declaring a major inevitably contributes to this feeling of overwhelm. Unfortunately, stress around career and the future continues after joining the workforce, as millennials frequently change jobs in search of the ideal profession.

Career assessments and counseling is a way to help students combat stress and anxiety before it becomes a true problem. The assessments provide the insight and information needed to determine the student’s true skills, interests, and goals. Through the results of the assessment, an experienced counselor can make professional recommendations about what major and career would be the best match for the student.

After receiving objective and straightforward advice from a trusted professional, students leave career counseling feeling excited about the future. They are armed with information about their personal values, as well as strategies and goals to help turn their dreams into reality. With this newfound information, they are able to focus on their studies without the added pressure of a career plan looming over them.
